Our new blog series, “Get to Know Us! Faces Behind the Brand,” gives you the opportunity to meet some of our staff here at Mediscan. This month, we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Lomino, a school-based therapy recruitment specialist with Mediscan for 11 years. She is very passionate about her role in placing educational professionals in school settings and the valuable service they provide to children who need it most.
How long have you worked with Mediscan?
I have been with Mediscan for 11 years this October. My time with Mediscan has gone by so fast! It seems like I just started yesterday. Prior to coming to Mediscan, I worked in corporate human resources with an advertising agency, airline, and a bio-pharmaceutical corporation. I was involved with recruiting, benefits compensation and employee relations. While I was a corporate recruiter, I had the opportunity to interface with headhunting and executive search firms. I always thought that recruiting from the “other side” would be an option for me. Prior to starting with Mediscan, I stayed at home with my two children for 9 years. When it was time to return to work, I thought Mediscan would be a good fit. I guess it was because I never looked back!
What do you love most about working with Mediscan?
I have always had a knack for “making a match.” I think this is what I love most about Mediscan. There is a great satisfaction in finding the perfect job for a candidate. I particularly like placing educational professionals in school settings. The therapists that we place provide a valuable service to the children who need it most, and I feel very fortunate that I have developed a rapport with them over the years. I also enjoy working with new graduate CF candidates with their application process and those relocating for a contract assignment.
What advice would you give to a new graduate wanting to pursue a career in school-based therapy?
The advice I give to all the new school-based therapy graduates is to contemplate doing a contract at least for the first year. This is good option for many reasons, including the ability to get to know the school prior to committing to a direct hire. It is also my experience that once the school gets to know the therapist, they often request to hire them direct. I also like to mention that if they are flexible to travel, they might be eligible for tax free stipends, thus substantially increasing their take home pay.
What has been your favorite memory thus far as a recruiter for school-based therapy professionals?
Some of my fondest memories include the conferences that I have attended representing Mediscan. I have met many of the therapists that I have placed with schools. It is always great when you can put a face to a name, and I enjoy hearing about their experiences at the schools and how much they enjoy their assignments. I also enjoy spending time with my Mediscan colleagues outside of the office.
What keeps you busy when you’re not at work?
When I am not at work, I love spending time with my family and friends. I love to travel and recently my husband David and I took a trip to Tuscany, Italy. We thoroughly enjoyed the people, the scenery, the food and the wine. Italy is definitely a place I will return to again and again. I am also going to Montreal shortly to spend time with a good friend from college. I am blessed to have two wonderful children: Julia, age 26 and Robert, age 23. They join us for family trips and weekends when their time allows. Additionally, I have a fabulous dog that we adopted on a trip to Hawaii one year. Also, I have recently returned to community college to pursue pottery! I absolutely love it and will start my second semester in late August.
